A performance space designed by artists.

The Alluvion is a community powered, accessible, and immersive space for performing arts, visual arts, and events in Traverse City.

The Alluvion is a 150 capacity venue and event space located on the second floor of The Commongrounds Cooperative building at the edge of The Boardman-Ottaway River near downtown Traverse City. This intimate, creative space is designed with optimal acoustics and world-class equipment. It is dedicated to producing high-quality, highly-accessible performances, community events, visual arts, classes, workshops, and so much more.

The Alluvion is co-owned by three partners: Commongrounds Cooperative, Jeff Haas, and Crosshatch Center for Art & Ecology.

“This space will support young and emerging artists right here in our community. Our kids and our grandkids will have a space to experiment, to connect with each other, and be seen as the artists they are becoming.

This is how a community becomes an art community. We nurture it. We make space for it. We honor it, and by doing that, we make something happen here that is unlike anything else in the region.”

What we built

We spent over a year in deep conversation, with artists at the center, designing this space to be simple and welcoming. There’s a generous lobby out front, and you enter the listening room through paired double-doors. The venue itself is filled with natural light. Picture 100 - 170 people, seated in comfortable chairs, and a stage that puts the performer just high enough so that everyone can see, but still close enough to reach out and touch the first row of the audience.

  • The Alluvion includes a small recording studio built into the performance space, enabling live-streaming of performances around the world and professional audio and video recording of what happens in the room.

  • We are a space that keeps its doors open all day long, all week long, all year long—when a performance isn’t happening, it will serve as a community arts space, a health and wellness space, a meeting hall, and a gathering place for the community.

  • Located on the second floor of the Commongrounds Cooperative building, whose co-tenants include Higher Grounds coffee, Nobo Mrkt food hall, Northern Bloom childcare center, Commonplace co-working space, and two floors of workforce housing.

  • The Alluvion will contain a subtle, thoughtfully designed service bar featuring carefully crafted and locally sourced alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages, along with a fresh and creative food menu presented in partnership with our downstairs neighbor, Nobo Mrkt.

  • Together, we’re building an arts space that is accessible to all abilities and welcoming to all artists and audiences. Together, we’re building a beacon for regional and national artists in northern Michigan that will be known by all for its exceptional production, immersive connection, and inclusive culture.

Most importantly, what we are building together isn’t just a space—it’s a culture of listening that creates some of the best musical and theatrical moments you’ve ever experienced. In order to open the doors this fall, we need support from people like YOU to meet our goal.
