An Eighth St. Landmark

Over two and a half years in the making, the Alluvion marquee is the first of its kind on 8th Street and gives prominence to the world class performing arts space on the second floor, The Alluvion.

Most of The Alluvion build out was finished in the beginning of 2023 and plans for the marquee were already in the works by the time May Erlewine sold out the first official performance in March of 2023. Developing a large marquee on the exterior of a mixed use cooperative was no small feat. Commongrounds worked with multiple sign companies, created dozens and dozens of designs and worked with multiple parties to fundraise for the build out.

“When I said yes to managing and helping design the marquee for this building (July 2022), I had no idea of the complexities, hurdles and length of time it would take to put something like this together.” - Jessica Kooiman Parker, then Director of Art and Design at Commongrounds.

Ultimately, Image 360 was brought in to help design, construct, and implement the marquee in the beginning of 2024. Andrew Kohlmann, the Owner of Image360, took the reins as the project manager and his team worked through the barriers of zoning, ultimately deciding to keep the height low and the scale in line with permitting requirements. Rachael Peterson took on the role of Lead Project Designer for Image360, and in close concert with Jessica and the Commongrounds team, they were able to bring Jessica’s vision to life. Final design approval was confirmed in August of 2024 and then it was up to engineering, production and lighting.

The marquee design references marquees of yester-year with neon striping, an old school pronto track text board, bulb lights and large channel lettering. It’s also completely modern with two electronic message boards, LED neon, and dimmable lights. For Image 360, this is one of the largest signs they’ve ever built.

“For us, this project represents not only challenges in size and scale, but in complexity as well. A marquee is, by nature, a departure from normal signage.

As such, this project has truly been a full team effort, not just within our staff here at Image360, but with our partners at Commongrounds. Jessica’s vision for the project was exciting from the beginning, but beyond that she and her team have been wonderful collaborators.

I would also like to thank our fabrication team for all their hard work through the construction, painting, wiring and assembly process. We look forward to this project’s installation so it can be enjoyed by The Alluvion staff and patrons, as well as the community at large.” -Tyler Palsrok, General Manager at Image 360.
