EMILEE PETERSMARK

Emilee Petersmark has been a member of the beloved Grand Rapids band The Crane Wives (1.4m Spotify monthly listeners, 713.5k TikTok likes) for 15 years now, but parallel to that career, she has worked as an acclaimed visual artist, producing original artwork as well as commissions for such musicians as the Accidentals and Melophobix.

She also has a collection of songs that felt too personal for the Wives' ever-growing sound, exploring the depths of adoption trauma and the experience of being a queer Korean adoptee growing up in the Midwest.

Those songs will grace a solo record set to be released in the fall of 2026, offering listeners a peek into the soul of a fierce and restless heart.

i.am.james

i.am.james. is the indie-folk project of Leelanau County-born singer-songwriter Sierra Cassidy, blending contemporary folk, indie rock, and cinematic pop.

A graduate of Interlochen Arts Academy and Berklee College of Music drop-out, Cassidy spent her early twenties performing across Nashville and Northern Michigan- both solo and fronting a trio.

In 2022, she released a series of singles written and recorded in Nashville that earned several big playlist placements and features on indie blogs being noted as “heartache to dance to.” Swirling around the edge of all things alternative, the first releases of i.am.james. are an unusual cocktail of captivating melodies and heart-bearing lyrics tied together in a sonically lush vibe. i.am.james. embarked on a lengthy summer tour in 2022 reaching crowds both large and small across the midwest with acoustic versions of these releases- notable performances include Musician’s Corner (Nashville, TN), Erickson Center for the Arts (Curtis, MI), and Hey Nonny (Arlington Heights, IL).

After a brief stint of living and playing music in New York City, she returned to her Northern Michigan roots in 2023 and began recording her debut full-length album, The Garden, with Michael Dause of TreeTone Studios at the helm of recording and engineering. Recorded in a cottage deep in the snow-covered woods of Northern Michigan, the project reflects this scene; intimate and transformative drawing sonic inspiration from artists like Pinegrove, KT Tunstall, and Maggie Rogers.

The project is reflective of the contemporary folk and indie rock sound i.am.james. delivered while on a 2024 summer tour, with performances at major Michigan music festivals like Bliss Festival and Wheatland. Whether performing solo or with a full band, i.am.james. delivers a sound that is emotionally resonant, story-driven, and steeped in atmosphere.

LOREN JOHNSON

“You know what they say about books and covers, when Loren Johnson starts singing, you may be surprised by the deep, warm, rich sound that comes from her slight frame” (Earthwork Music, 2023). Steeped in Michigan’s folk traditions yet unafraid of indie-pop sweep, Johnson’s music pairs luminous finger-style guitar with songwriting that is catchy, candid, and emotionally unguarded.

With vocals both powerful and unshakably warm, Johnson carries tenderness without fragility and delivers vulnerability in a way that lands less like confession and more like strength. Her 2023 debut album How to Change is the culmination of years worth of writing, layered and woven together through the shared theme of transition - guiding the listener through an arc of uncertainty, resistance, and eventually renewal.

Even if her music is new to you, Johnson’s photography may already be familiar. Her expansive portrait work and signature surrealist live-concert images have become a steady staple within the visual landscape of Michigan’s music scene and beyond. With a focus on musicians and artists, she approaches each shoot as a collaboration rather than a session; and the results have made her a trusted name from emerging artists to established acts alike.

Whether behind the mic or behind the lens, Loren Johnson’s voice is unmistakable; and for her, music and photography are two sides of the same lifelong pursuit: giving form to feeling. And when on stage , she inspires both the comfort of a home and an invitation to grow beyond it.
