THE BOB JAMES QUARTET

BOB JAMES

Originally from Marshall, Missouri, two-time GRAMMY winner Bob James (b.1939) has enjoyed a tremendously varied career, characterized by many fascinating twists and turns.  To some, he’s a hip-hop icon because samples of his music played a pivotal role in the foundation of rap, while to others, he’s the godfather of smooth jazz.

After being discovered by Quincy Jones at the Notre Dame Collegiate Jazz Festival in 1962, James made his mark at producer Creed Taylor’s CTI label in the 1970s when he was the architect of an innovative new sound that fused jazz with classical music and funk. James’s music found a broader audience in 1978 after his track “Angela” was used as the theme to the popular U.S. TV sitcom, “Taxi.”  He also ran his record label, Tappan Zee Records, for many years, has released albums dedicated to classical music, and co-founded the popular and hugely successful smooth jazz group Fourplay. His work has also been abundantly sampled by hip-hop DJs and producers. Now signed to international record label, evosound, Evolution Music Group, his 2023 album, Jazz Hands, was nominated for a GRAMMY.

JAMES ADKINS

James Adkins was born in Orlando, FL on November 7th, 1994. James is an American singer, songwriter and musician known for his boundary pushing eclectic style. James spent his childhood playing drums in church, also singing from the drum set. James released his debut single ‘’Better Without Me’’ in 2019, the song captivated others, with smooth lyrics and powerful lyrics. As years passed, he has been given the opportunity to play for the legendary Grammy award winning Jazz staple Bob James. Bob is the co-founder of the band ‘Fourplay’, with hits like ‘After the Dance’ which ft. El DeBarge. When James is not touring he is home writing and recording music, he also fronts a fresh band out of Austin TX, ‘Sketch’. Where he gets to express his love for singing and playing drums along side some of his close friends.

MICHAEL PALAZZOLO

Michael Palazzolo, a professional bassist from Windsor, brings a sense of melody and groove far beyond his 31 years. So much so, that his playing has caught the attention of legendary American jazz composer Bob James. Since 2017, Palazzolo has accompanied James, touring and playing across the world. Not bad for a local kid. Michael comes from a long line of professional musicians that includes numerous uncles, aunts and cousins who have been playing music for years. He credits his father Nino Sr. as being his biggest influence – not only with his musical career, but life in general.

ANDREY CHMUT

Andrey Chmut is a Ukrainian saxophone player who hasn’t been able to see most of his family since February 24, 2022 when his home country was invaded by Russia and a war broke out between the two nations. He moved to the US in November to start a new life – but not without obstacles. At age 30, he has already recorded three contemporary jazz albums – including one with American legend pianist Bob James. He’s also part of the band that accompanies Ukrainian pop singer sensation Jamala in her world tours. Born in a small village in Ukraine, son of a Baptist pastor, Chmut developed a connection with music since he was a child. He was a singer in his father’s church choir. But when was 7 years old, his father invited a saxophonist to play in the church’s band – and since then Chmut fell in love with the instrument. Coming from a humble household, though, Chmut was only able to buy his first sax two years later. At 14, he moved to the capital Kyiv, where he studied at the R. Glier Kyiv Municipal Academy for 8 years and got a bachelor’s degree in musical studies. In 2017, he got a master’s degree for the Kyiv Institute of Culture.
