DON WAS
Born in Detroit, Don Was graduated from Oak Park High School in the Detroit suburb of Oak Park, then attended the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor but dropped out after the first year.
Was started his career playing in Detroit bar bands and co-founding cult heroes Was (Not Was). He’s gone on to become one of the most successful figures in contemporary music as a sought-after producer, prolific composer for film and television, head of the legendary jazz label Blue Note Records, staging concerts and leading a band of gifted Motor City musicians.
Was had been making music for the better part of a decade when he formed Was (Not Was) and their eccentric, dance-friendly music earned them a hit album, 1988's “What Up, Dog?” Was had already risen from producing local acts to major-label artists, including Jules Shear, Helen Terry, and David Lasley, and he'd go on to work with the Rolling Stones, Bonnie Raitt, the B-52's, Willie Nelson, Bob Dylan, and many more. For his work as a record producer, he has won six Grammy Awards.
In 2024, Was debuted another ambitious group, Don Was and the Pan-Detroit Ensemble, a jazz project inspired by the diverse range of sounds of the city's musical community.
