The Bad Plus brings their global tour to our community living room, aka The Alluvion, an artists destination in Traverse City this fall. The Bad Plus are the ultimate originals.
For two decades they have played with spirit and adventure, made their own rules and done so with a bold sense of creativity and intent.
Founding members Reid Anderson and Dave King enlisted guitarist Ben Monder and saxophonist Chris Speed to conjure a new incarnation that offers boundless possibilities.

The Bad Plus
The Bad Plus takes full advantage of their expansive palette on its latest album, “Complex Emotions,” the second release by the new line-up.
The Bad Plus make a statement about continuity in the midst of change, finally branding an album with this long-held mantra declares that the reconfigured group has discovered ways to delve deeper and venture further.
Dave King - Drums
Born in Minneapolis, Dave King studied piano and drums as a young person. King played in some amazing grade school, junior high school and high school bands and ensembles. He spent some time in New York City and LA in through the late ‘80s and mid ‘90s before he moved back home for several projects.
In 2000, King co-founded The Bad Plus in NYC.
Performing music in 75 countries and six continents. He’s appeared on over 50 recordings.
Besides his working groups, he’s recorded and-or performed with Bill Frisell, Joshua Redman, Dewey Redman. Jeff Beck. Tim Berne, Hank Roberts, Chris Speed, Kurt Rosenwinkle, Django Bates, Dead Prez, The Coup, Joe Lovano, Bill Carrothers, Anthony Cox, Chris Morrissey, Mason Jennings, Haley Bonar, Meat Beat Manifesto, Craig Taborn, Matt Mitchell, Matt Maneri, Benoit Delbeq, Craig Green, Jason Moran, Tchad Blake, David Torn, Donna Lewis, Atmosphere, and a few more great people.
Reid Anderson - Bass
Originally from Minneapolis, Reid Anderson emerged as one of the most promising bassists and composers on the New York jazz scene. He studied classical music at Philadelphia's Curtis Institute of Music, graduating in 1993. Upon arriving in New York in 1994, he began working with like-minded young players such as Mark Turner, Jorge Rossy, Ethan Iverson, Kurt Rosenwinkel, and Bill McHenry. Anderson has released a number of albums on the Fresh Sound/New Talent label, and he co-leads the acclaimed trio The Bad Plus with drummer David King and new member Orrin Evans. In addition, Anderson also fronts his own rock band, the Sun, for which he sings and plays guitar.
Chris Speed - Saxophone
Chris Speed is a tenor saxophonist, clarinetist and composer, whose work ranges widely, from a jazz base out through various forms of folk, classical and rock music. Affiliated with a bewildering variety of ensembles, he has been a prominent and influential voice in jazz and improvised music for three decades.
Born in 1967, Speed grew up in the Seattle area where he met future colleagues Jim Black and Andrew D'Angelo, all of whom ended up in Boston in the late 80's where they formed Human Feel with guitarist Kurt Rosenwinkel. After studies at New England Conservatory followed by a stint with the Artie Shaw Band - led by Dick Johnson - Speed moved to New York City where he started working with Tim Berne and his band Bloodcount.
In August of 2021, Speed, along with guitarist Ben Monder, joined The Bad Plus (with Reid Anderson and Dave King). Their debut record “the bad plus” was released on Edition Records September of 2022; their most recent, “Complex Emotions”, now avail on Mack Ave Records.
Ben Monder - Guitar
A musician in the New York City Area for over 30 years, Ben Monder has performed with a wide variety of artists, including Jack McDuff, Marc Johnson, Lee Konitz, Billy Childs, Andrew Cyrille, George Garzone, Paul Motian, Maria Schneder, Marshall Crenshaw and Jandek.
Monder also contributed guitar parts to the last David Bowie Album “Blackstar.” He conducts clinics and workshops around the world and has served on the faculties of the New England Conservatory and The New School. He was the recipient of a Doris Duke impact award in 2014 and a Shifting Foundation Grant in 2013. He continues to perform original music internationally in solo and trio settings and in a long standing duo project with vocalist Theo Bleckman. He’s appeared on over 200 CDs as a sideman and released seven as a band leader.
